TALLAHASSEE, June 23, 2005 – The National Federation of Independent Business last night named Florida’s David Hurley Southeast Region “Small-Business Champion.” Hurley, a successful small-business owner in Tampa, was recognized for his high-profile activism at the state and national levels, his unyielding devotion to encouraging entrepreneurship, and his strong commitment to his community.

Five regional winners including Hurley were honored during an awards dinner in Washington, D.C. Hurley was selected from a field of fellow Small-Business Champions from an eight-state region including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. NFIB’s Southeast Region has 84,000 small-business members, and NFIB boasts 600,000 members nationwide.

“David Hurley is a tireless advocate for free enterprise and highly deserving of this honor,” NFIB Southeast Region Vice President Ray Mahaffey said. “He promotes NFIB’s ideals at every opportunity, and stands out because he is dedicated to convincing elected officials and community leaders that small business is the engine of Florida’s and our nation’s economy.”

“David Hurley is a true asset for NFIB and small business – in Tallahassee and in Washington, D.C.,” NFIB/Florida State Director Steve Birtman said. “Many of our legislators in Florida know David because he consistently makes it a point to speak out for small-business owners on our critical issues.”

Hurley is owner of Landmark Engineering & Surveying in Tampa. A founding member of NFIB/Florida’s Leadership Council and its current chairman, Hurley is known for providing expert testimony before committees at the state and federal levels on key small-business issues.

Active in his community, Hurley is past president of the Hillsborough County Chamber of Commerce and Tiger Bay Club. He has served on various state and local boards, including the Hillsborough Transportation Committee, the County Charter Review Board and the Anti Drug Alliance.
“NFIB is my business’s voice in Tallahassee and Washington, D.C.,” Hurley said. “My business, my employees and my community benefit because key small-business concerns are being addressed.”
